Azure

Azure (or, to use her “real” name, Bha’Zhei) is the first Synth/Siinu created mostly by the Kiravai; she is also only the second (out of three) “true” Siinu to have been created in the Dauntless universe.

Names:
“Azure” is actually a translation; her “real” name is Bha’Zhei, which means Azure in Ki’za-ri, an old almost-unspoken Kiravai language. She usually goes by Azure, but answers just as readily to Bha’Zhei and variants of the two; Aze, Zhei etc. (although Lii is the only one that tends to call her “Zhei”, as it sounds close to the Ve-hei’ya for “my love”).

Appearance:

Excluding her colouration, Azure is for the most part a very normal-looking Kiravai pen. She is of average height, being just shy of eight feet tall, and average of build, although unusually for her kind she has small breasts (most pens are flat-chested unless nursing).

As her name suggests, Azure is blue in colouration – almost completely, from nose to tail. Her skin is a pale shade of royal blue, and her feathers a richer, darker blue, closer to indigo, usually marked with cyan and lilac iridescence. As a “gift” (although this description is tenuous) from Iios, she has the same interchangeable plating on her head, allowing for a larger range of hairstyles and colours. Her normal style is a plain crest of dark blue feathers, edged in green and violet, but she is just as happy with traditional Kiravai “hair”-feathers, or even real hair, all of which are typically the same dark blue with the occasional glitter of rainbows.
Her eyes and inside her mouth are the only part of her that are not blue, her eyes being an intense, considering golden yellow and inside her mouth being a dusky lilac.

Persona:

Azure is… well, atypical. She would certainly not fit into Kiravai polite society! She is wilful, single-minded, and would be considered “unladylike” and rebellious by her creators’ society – and if not outright reprogrammed there would certainly be demands she go in for “corrective training”. This is partly because her training was incomplete when she and Ivy made a run for it, and she had not yet been indoctrinated into the “correct” way a pen should behave, but also partly down to the fact that the bulk of her choices are made based on what she sees as “most logical” – and bowing and scraping to a male for no reason aside from the fact he is male is not one of them.
She considers Ivy to be a sister, rather than an aunt or mother, which is probably a more accurate description since Ivy participated in her construction. Since Ivy allows her to make her own decisions, most of these are based on what she herself sees as right and wrong, rather than society dictates as such.

She carries point, which is forbidden by Kiravai law; pens caught even just looking after their husband’s rahi if he is away on business are heavily fined, and daring to carry and wield such a weapon would get her locked up for life in Kiravai society. She cannot see why she is not entitled to carry, however, as she is stronger, faster and more capable than any cob at wielding it, and nothing Lii says will dissuade her out of it. She sees it as her duty to protect him (another fact which he finds a little shaming – since he sees that as his job, to protect her) and wears her sword to do so.
She takes her responsibilities seriously; she is strongly devoted to Lii, who she sees as the centre of her universe, and for the most part utterly ignores his protests of “personal inadequacy”.

Azure is quite intensely emotional – if she is upset, for instance, she will let you know she is upset, unlike Ivy, who is much more the “stiff-upper-lip” sort and keeps her feelings to herself to save others having to worry about them. She speaks her mind (and if someone doesn’t like it, that’s their problem), wears her heart on her sleeve, and is often fairly brusque and abrupt in manner even if she doesn’t mean to cause offence. (If she doesn’t understand something, she’s not too shy to ask, either.)

“Violence is to be abhorred” was a directive built into her thinking at a very deep level, but that is not to say she herself is non-violent – indeed, she has killed once or twice before, being quick and precise about it, and sees no reason not to use violence to stop violence. Again, however, her beliefs about it are strangely “ethical” – her one or two “hiccups” have mostly been down to the idea that perhaps the only way to stop an individual doing something she believed was incorrect was to take drastic action. She has nonetheless grown a lot more “moderate” lately – more inclined to use restraining force than lethal force.

Notes:
Originally, Azure was to be a more intense shade of pale turquoise, but somewhere along the line I started to see her as a more demure, paler “royal” blue, and so that point got revised. Similarly she was to be more “feathery” – on instruction from the command Dominae, she was to look different enough that she wouldn’t “just blend in” with her peers – but again I couldn’t get it to look how I wanted and took that point out.

Art:
Valkyrie in Blue – RAR
Azure, internals – a play on her nonbiological nature. I wasn’t overly happy with the pose, but I liked the face and didn’t want to spoil it, so it’s remained like this, for now.
Dancers – Lii and Azure, married.
Love Transcends – a little anatomically-dubious sketch with Azure and Lii. Silly and schmaltzy, but I liked it.
Azure, realism – or rather, an attempt at it.
